A Father's Sacrifice

Sgt. Nathen Werner with NashWhile on Facebook the other day, I came across this photo of our nephew holding his newborn son.  My heart leapt.  What a precious reminder of life and those men and women serving in the armed forces fighting to protect it. 

It's also a stark reminder of the fathers (and mothers) who are sacrificing time with their families to serve our country.  And while this dad may be home to enjoy his first Father's Day, in October he's deployed again, this time to Afghanistan.

Do Couples Prepare for a Wedding or a Marriage?

According to Dennis Rainey

 

"We spend far more time preparing for the wedding and all the details surrounding that than we do for the marriage.  We spend more money on the wedding dress than we do on marriage preparation."

 

By a look at these statistics recently published -- I'd say he makes a strong argument:

  • $72 billion per year is spent on weddings.
  • The average wedding budget is $20,000.
  • $1,016 is the average cost of wedding rings for the bride and groom.

Understanding Forgiveness

Last night in our couple's Bible study we read and reflected on several Scripture verses on forgiveness.  One of our discussions centered on what forgiveness is and isn't.  I think this article from Dennis Rainey provides a helpful perspective on that very subject: 

I am often reminded of what C. S. Lewis said: "Everyone thinks forgiveness is a lovely idea until he has something to forgive."   How true. It's not until forgiveness becomes personal and costly that it takes on its actual size and weight.
