Are You A Pack-Rat?

Are you a pack-rat?  Do you save things just knowing someday you'll need one of them - but when you do, you can't even find it?  I have a friend just like that.  She won't get rid of anything "useful."

Watching her overwhelming clutter control her, I decided it was time to eliminate a lot of things I've been holding on to.  So, each month I give away something, and throw away something.  My kids and grandkids have begun to love this, as I am passing on things that have meaning to them - their old school papers, pictures, etc.

I got the idea from Emilie Barnes.  On "Keep It Simple" she often talks about people being "clutter keepers," and says that removing the clutter will help to restore peace to your life.  Emilie has great ideas to help bring your clutter under control - here are a few of her useful tips:

  • No more piles - assign everything a place.
  • Get rid of items you don't use.
  • Buy a new item?  An old item goes out.
  • Don't store junk mail - throw it away as it comes in.
  • Don't store old magazines.  Take out articles of interest and drop into a file folder.
  • Tidy up before you go to bed in the evening so you don't get up to a mess.

It does feel good to eliminate things that I've been storing for years, and I love knowing because they are special, they are appreciated by someone else.

With a little effort, you too can bring your clutter under control, and gain a more peaceful lifestyle.
