A Father's Legacy

A hero to many is legendary Coach John Wooden who passed away earlier this month at the age of 99.  Coach Wooden was more than a coach teaching the game of basketball; he was intent on raising well-rounded men and was like a father to many of his players, long after their basketball careers ended.

My own Dad was a huge Wooden fan and while we lived in Arizona (faithful Pac-10 members!), UCLA always had a good name in our home because of Wooden's example.  I'm thankful that my Dad is one of my heroes as he also loves the Lord and has exemplified many of Wooden's leadership and character traits as a godly father.

When my son was born 10 years ago, my Dad passed along this quote to my husband which I didn't realize until recently that it was a verse that John Wooden's father passed onto him when the Coach's son was born in 1936:

A careful man I must be;
A little fellow follows me.
I know I dare not go astray;
For fear he'll go the self-same way.
He thinks that I am good and fine;
Believes in every word of mine.
The base in me he must not see;
This little chap who follows me.
I must be careful as I go;
Through summer sun and winter snow.
Because I am building, for the years to be;
This little chap who follows me.

In celebration of Dads this Father's Day weekend, I hope you'll air the radio special with Elizabeth & Jim George titled, "A Gift for Dad - from A Woman After God's Own Heart."  It's an opportunity to encourage those in your audience to remain faithful in their roles as husbands and fathers.

You can easily download this at our ftp site.  Just go to Specials/Father's Day.

A grateful daughter,
