Do you want a high-five and free t-shirt?

Compassion radio stations are heroesRecently I and a few friends went to a large Christian music festival where we talked to hundreds of people who wanted to save the world.  We told them they could.  We gave them high-fives and a free t-shirt that says "COMPASSION" in a really cool design.  We told people that saving the world is a lot better than high fives and free t-shirts.  And they believed us.  How do we know?  When they left us they walked away with a photo of their newly sponsored child.

As a Compassion volunteer I talked with a lot of folks who were curious about Compassion.  I didn't tell them what they do or how they did it.  At least not at first.  In fact, the first thing I didn't say was, "Compassion is a child-sponsorship organization that helps 1 million kids in some of the poorest countries in the world."  And I didn't say, "Your $38 a month with change the course of one child's life."

Both those things are true, but that's not what they wanted to hear.

They wanted to know why. Why Compassion?  Why do I need to care?  The answer?  It's a little tricky.  Not one-size-fits-all.  You see, aligning yourself with an organization that cares about the well-being of children says something about you.  It says something about you to your friends and family.  It reinforces what you believe about yourself.  A neighbor who sees a photo of your sponsored child placed on your refrigerator makes a comment.  You get to explain who the child is and the help you're giving them.  It's a way to broadcast who you are.  In the radio world, we get that!

So that day, instead of telling people what Compassion is all about I got to know what they're all about.  Do they want to save the world by changing the world?  Do they want to save a life by changing a life?  So does Compassion.  Compassion releases children from poverty...in Jesus' name.  Join them!

Many radio stations have joined Compassion, too.  They tell their listeners about the kid they met at a Compassion project in El Salvador.  They challenge parents to sacrifice their trips to Starbucks in order to teach their kids the importance of giving.  They air "Speak Up With Compassion®" which gives Compassion President Wess Stafford a chance to stir the heart of an adult who will commit to being a champion for children - even in their own home.  They ask people to join them.

Who wouldn't want to be known for releasing children from poverty...in Jesus' name?  (Even if it doesn't get you a high-five and free t-shirt).
