John Wooden--Lessons Off the Court

My son's 8th grade graduation is tonight - hard to believe.   It really just doesn't seem possible.

As my melancholy heart considers the close of one chapter in my young son's life and the dawn of a new season, I learned of the grave condition of John Wooden, legendary UCLA basketball coach.  He's now 99 years old.  He was admitted to the hospital this week due to dehydration.

Recalling my days of watching UCLA basketball as a Bruin undergrad, it was there when I first learned of the legendary Coach Wooden.   Though he had long retired as a coach when I attended UCLA, his signature was everywhere.  From his name proudly displayed on the athletic building, The Wooden Center, to his pictures hanging in Royce Hall.

And today, his signature is on my heart as I came across John Wooden's Seven Point Creed given to him by his father upon his graduation from grammar school:

  • Be true to yourself.
  • Make each day your masterpiece.
  • Help others.
  • Drink deeply from good books, especially the Bible.
  • Make friendship a fine art.
  • Build a shelter against a rainy day.
  • Pray for guidance and give thanks for your blessings every day.

As it seems the time has come to bid farewell to a legend, a hero of a man-a coach, a husband, a father and a servant of Christ, I prayerfully consider the man my son is becoming . . . and I decide that sharing John Wooden's Seven Point Creed with him would be the perfect way to mark his graduation day.

Awesome, Lee, and give my congratulations to Joshua!

John Wooden's Seven-Point Creed.....there's simply little else to add.

After our Savior, the three men I admire most as examples of character are the apostle Paul, Harry S. Truman, and John Wooden.

Thank you for the fine observation, Lee Ann.

Lee Ann,

Your comments are pregnant with the pure, powerful and positive attibutes that made John Wooden such a leader.

Your son's potential is the very seed of the creator who will cause him to continue to grow into the man of God that Jesus sees in him already.

Your passing on the seven point creed to your son is a beautiful tribute to John Wooden who also graduates this week.
