If I Knew Then What I Know Now

I grew up in a very good home with loving, supportive parents who praised us when we did well and disciplined us when we needed it most.  They took our family to church every Sunday and on vacations once a year.  They taught us a strong work ethic. We didn't have a lot of stuff, just the basic necessities, but we never felt deprived.  In every respect, they did the best to raise their family with the resources they had.

I was pondering that when I was auditioning an upcoming "FamilyLife Today" broadcast and heard Bob Lepine ask, "Who is instructing your daughter in what it means to be a woman?"   While I reflected on the many things my parents did right, Bob's question is one I wished they'd considered more seriously when I was teenager.  Unfortunately, most of the instruction I was receiving on womanhood at that time came out of the feminist movement.

That's why I appreciate women like author Susan Hunt who has developed a discipleship program for mentoring teen girls. In her interview with Dennis Rainey she says ...

"What we have to realize is the world's message is being delivered to them visually and verbally 24/7. We can't just walk up and have this conversation 'Let me start talking to you about your legacy of womanhood.'  The discipleship is both relational as well as content."

It's important for young girls to learn what biblical womanhood is from mature Christian ladies. Boy, if I knew then what I know now, if I had had the influence of godly women in my youth, I'm certain I would've made better choices for my life and avoided the consequences of bad ones.
