It's not every day I consider dying my hair blue - even though the person holding the can of "Be Wild" blue hair spray guaranteed it would come out in one wash.
On this particular day, my fellow co-worker Katie Burke had just shared with our team her experience serving as a "Short Term Missionary" (STM) at a Joni and Friends® Family Retreat. Part of the retreat experience, she said, was participating in "Crazy Hair Day." Katie brought photos and a half-empty can of blue hair spray to prove it!
I asked her to share a bit about her experience as a first-time STM:
Serving as an STM was a great idea that was not my own. I had heard about the opportunity for years, but it wasn't until reading a post on Joni's blog called "I Need Your Help" that I decided to seriously consider signing up.
Please note that nowhere in Joni's blog does it reference blue hair. In fact, since coming back from the Family Retreat, I have yet to find anywhere on Joni's website an explanation of why it's a good idea to dye your hair blue. So I thought I'd one come up with three good reasons to dye your hair blue or, "Why it's a Great Idea to Volunteer at a Family Retreat":
- You can't take yourself too seriously. From singing silly camp songs to acting in the role of "Dorothy" in a wild skit at the talent show . . . it felt good to release and embrace the theme of the retreat: "Be Free!"
- You rely on God's strength. In her "I Need Your Help" blog post that prompted my interest in volunteering, Joni quotes this verse: "By His power, may God fulfill every good purpose of yours and every act prompted by your faith" (11 Thess. 1:11b). Little did I know that, just a little over a month from reading this, I would really need to rely on God's power for energy, focus and wisdom!
- It's good to get out of your comfort zone. Serving as an STM is a crash course in seeing just how flexible you are - or aren't. Yes, that includes square dancing and . . . blue hair!
Now there are many more good reasons to dye your hair blue (or, serve as an STM), but I hope I've given you a taste. If you need more convincing, feel free to ask me and I'll share some more good reasons. In fact, if you're in the area feel free to stop by -- I still have a little "blue" left in the can of hair spray. And yes, it does come out in one wash.
