I read in the paper this week about the little boy who is the youngest to scale Mt. Whitney in a single day.
At 7 years old, Tyler Armstrong is missing his two front teeth and is getting ready to start second grade. But instead of sharing about typical little boy summer highlights in class, he'll tell of his dizzying adventure climbing 14, 494-foot Mt. Whitney.
He excitedly tells of even bigger plans to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa. His father said he is supportive of Tyler's ambition to climb bigger mountains.
I can only imagine Tyler's dad's excitement about his son's accomplishment . . . his commitment to help him conquer whatever mountains he chooses. For now, though, instead of helping my children train by adopting a regimen of running and hiking, I'm preparing them for the mountains they may face which they didn't choose.
That's why I'm so looking forward to sharing Heaven, God's Promise for Me by Anne Graham Lotz with my little Rebecca. The book equips parents to talk with children about heaven and Jesus and how God is preparing heaven for each of us . . . a poignant discussion particularly with the 10 year mark of 9/11 approaching.
Anne had been invited to speak with a group of pregnant mothers whose husbands had been killed in the terrorist event. In addition to caring for the mothers, Anne thought about how stories of 9/11 and other news items could cause fear in children. Anne wrote Heaven, God's Promise for Me to remind children that God was a loving father who would provide a loving home for them.
My Rebecca may not climb Mt. Whitney but she'll no doubt face mountains she'll need to climb . . . and the reminder that Heaven is a place of love that we can all look forward to seeing one day, will be a part of the training she'll need to prepare.
