"The ultimate test of a moral society is the kind of world that it leaves to its children." Dietrich Bonhoeffer
In a recent email from FamilyLife, Dennis Rainey said this statement from Dietrich Bonhoeffer--German theologian who died standing against Hitler's evil regime--impacted him so much he wrote a letter of apology to his adult children. Here's portion of that letter he shared with readers:
The assignment that Bonhoeffer wrote about is soon to become yours, but I wanted you to know that your mom and I attempted to do our part in leaving you something good-quite different than the current "world." I'm embarrassed to say that your mom and I, along with our generation, were not as effective in pushing back against evil as we'd hoped to be. I'm afraid the world that we're in the process of leaving is FAR MORE of a challenge to you and your children than it was to us when we were your age raising many of you. I pray you do a better job than we did.
I guess I'm especially thoughtful of this today because last Wednesday I gave a 55-minute PowerPoint presentation that contained over 110 slides on "10 Cultural Trends and Assaults on Marriage and Family." The institution of family that God created is under attack by evil forces as never before.
May God grant you favor as you push back against evil, share Christ with your contemporaries and "let your lights shine before men." Be about His mission.
Though these words were first intended for his children, Dennis provides a challenging reminder for all of us.
FamilyLife is grateful for your partnership over the years and looks forward to bringing help and hope to your listeners in 2011. May God grant you favor in the year ahead as you continue to be about His mission in broadcasting the "good news."
