I am no stranger to orthodontics and dental work. Braces twice, spacers, retainers, oral surgery, teeth pulled...my dad has good reason to call mine a "million dollar smile"! But besides the cosmetics of dental work there is much hygienic value in keeping clean teeth and gums. It is also incredibly beneficial to begin these habits at a very young age!
The Mercy Ships® team is aware of the importance of this! The team brings the tools needed to practice dental procedures when in port but the reality is that sometimes the problems they face could have been avoided with better hygiene. This is a wonderful illustration of one of my favorite things about Mercy Ships®: They maintain a comprehensive approach to helping the communities they visit. Not only do the Mercy Ships®' Teams perform many life-changing and life-saving dental procedures with each destination, they also implement teaching programs in the local area. They teach the importance of dental hygiene and pass out simple and yet essential tools like a toothbrush!
What a difference this lesson will make in the lives of, not just the kids they have in the classroom, but those kids' families, and even to the next generation!

P.S. Please keep the Mercy Ships® Team in your prayers as they are in the midst of dry docking before a big launch into field service in Guinea and using this time to breathe and prepare.
