"I think I'm going to enjoy this more than Facebook." That's what Peggy Campbell told me recently while I was giving her the grand tour of the popular sharing website, Pinterest.
I enjoy being a frequent Pinterest user, and that's because with each login I feel like I'm walking in to a well-curated boutique designed just for me. From the practical "why didn't I think of that" household tip to the breathtaking photos and funny quotes...it's easy to see why the site now brings in 1.36 million users daily.
There's another side of Pinterest I recently discovered that I'm really excited about -- and you need to know about it: Non-Profits on Pinterest.
Why your Non-Profit should be on Pinterest:
1. With Pinterest you can promote a lifestyle, use it like a focus group, crowdsource, run contests and inspire your team. (Read more)
2. The majority of Pinterest users are moms. (See Pinteresting facts about users)
3. Even the First Lady is now on Pinterest (with over 30,000 followers).
How to start your Non-Profit on Pinterest:
Compassion International has been using Pinterest for 8 months to "speak up with Compassion" on behalf of children in poverty (just like they do on their daily radio program, Facebook page, popular blog, etc.). They recently profiled their Pinterest activity on their blog ("Come Pine With Us!"), which provides the first step to starting your Non-Profit on Pinterest:
1. Identify and unleash a Pinterest user in your midst. (Meet Compassion's queen of pinning)
2. Create boards of inspiration, information and education. (See Compassion's Pinterest boards)
3. Invite your fans to find you on Pinterest. (And be sure to pin and repin with like-minded organizations!)
How to get the most out of Pinterest:
1. Stay informed on what makes a "top pin" like Mashable's "Top 10 Pinterest Pins This Week".
2. "Quotes and pics are M-O-N-E-Y on Pinterest." (from "Pinterest Tips from Power Users")
3. Be creative and be who you are. (My favorite Compassion board is their "Letter Writing Ideas")
So. . . are you ready to start pinning? As a first step, I recommend visiting Compassion's Pinterest boards to see how they use the popular site to highlight how they release children from poverty. . . in Jesus' name.
