When you think of reliable, what product comes to mind?
For me, it’s Timex—the watch that “Takes a licking, but keeps on ticking.” I go way back to John Cameron Swayze’s world tour of live TV commercials. He’d put his watch in peril to prove it could tolerate just about any harsh environment. His watch survived outboard motors, dishwashers, bottlenose dolphin and washing machines to prove your $15 investment would buy you a reliable timepiece. (BTW—I just realized I’m still wearing a $15 Timex watch!)

“This is going to hurt me far more than it will hurt you.”
Ever hear that? I did. Of course, I couldn’t fathom that statement was true until I had children of my own. My Dad used his hand to drive home the lesson. And then, in some great cosmic circular irony, I found myself uttering the same phrase when junior needed some corporal training. FWIW, I gave up spanking him early on when he started laughing at my angst and poor application of the lesson.
But at school, it was ...Read Full Post »

Ever said that?
I’m sure, in many ways and at many times in your life, that has been true. Like relaxing at the beach, watching the perfect sunset—a sky painted in deep hues of orange, blue, red and violet—“It doesn’t get any better than this!” Or you might have uttered that phrase while enjoying a superb meal, savoring every delicious morsel.
I confess the catchphrase has passed my lips more times than I deserve! Most recently, it was while playing golf on the most amazing course I’ve ...Read Full Post »

"Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip, that started from this tropic port, aboard this tiny ship...”
When I read those words, I actually hear the tune in my head. Maybe you do too. Clearly, I spent way too many hours growing up watching this very frustrating and banal sit com.
I confess, I’m a little ashamed that I know the words to that song. It seemed like everyone at a recent birthday party knew too. One of the guests actually ...Read Full Post »

How is it you can remember the words to a Dr. Seuss book from 30 years ago? The answer is, if you read it hundreds of times to your five children, it will become indelibly imprinted on your brain.
The Sneetches was one of those well-rehearsed books for me and my children. It’s been at least fifteen years since I last read that particular Seussian tome to our youngest. But I have always been able to recite the opening from memory:
“Now the star-bellied Sneetches had bellies with stars
And the ...

This past weekend I finished one of the most delightful books I’ve ever read. I don’t use the word “delightful” blithely. Each chapter was like savoring every morsel of a sumptuous meal. I was saddened when the book came to an end.
The book was “As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride” by Cary Elwes (the Dread Pirate Roberts). Actually, it was the audio book, which was read by the author with his charming British accent. That actually enhanced the experience.
The reading was also ...Read Full Post »
