We are living in a fatherless society. While our culture tends to treat fathers as unnecessary, it's apparent that a father's presence is critical to raising healthy, confident children. In fact, research indicates that fathers make all the difference in the world in their children's lives.
All this month, the daily "Family Facts" program focuses on fatherhood, sharing helpful information about their critical role in our culture, one that goes far beyond that of breadwinner.

I'm very thankful for my mom, Dot, and that at age 81, she is still going strong. To think that I could've lost her at a young age due to a cancer diagnosis makes me all the more grateful for her presence in my life. I think of the way she has faithfully loved my Dad for 62 years of marriage, sacrificed some of her own dreams to raise four children, and the investment she's made in her grandchildren's lives. She's irreplaceable and I honestly don't know (or want to know) how my life ...

This week the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in cases that challenge the constitutionality of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and California's Proposition 8. And, today, it's anticipated that thousands will gather at the National Mall in Washington, DC to "March for Marriage," showing their support for traditional marriage.

This is National Marriage Week-a weeklong campaign to "strengthen marriage, reduce divorce, and promote marriage prior to childbearing." A primary objective of this campaign is to promote the benefits of marriage, including the fact that stronger marriages bring economic stability to individuals and to the nation and provides the best environment for thriving children.

Religious Liberty Under Attack

Did you know that January 16th was Religious Freedom Day in America? It didn't get a lot of attention, but in this article from The Heritage Foundation, the organization reports President Obama's proclamation on religious freedom along with noting the irony because the sad fact is, Americans are being forced to fight for their religious liberty in the courts.

For our family, Christmas vacation has always afforded us the luxury to take a "time out" and enjoy some activities as a family that we wouldn't normally take the time for during a year that's packed with school, homework, church, sports, and other commitments.
Whether it's playing games, taking a hike, or heading to the beach (yes, we can do that in Southern California during December!), we enjoy quality time as a family and I believe that it strengthens and bonds us together as we refocus for the New Year ahead.
