Not So Common

I'm reading a superb book called Anonymous: Jesus' Hidden Years ... And Yours, by Alicia Britt Chole.  The premise is that "we all experience times of hiddenness, when our potential is unseen and our abilities unapplauded."  That can be painful.  Chole calls those times "anonymous seasons of the soul."

The truth is, we tend to experience "anonymous seasons" multiple times in life.  The first day at a new school ... first job in the "real world" ... beginning of marriage ... empty nest ... retirement.

There are deep traits and disciplines we only develop when we're stripped of praise and recognition.  Jesus is ...

Advent Starts Now

  • Tuesday, December 1, 2015

Christmas-Tree-Max-Lucado-UpWords®What Advent traditions mark this season for you?  As children, my sisters and I enjoyed those cardboard Advent calendars from the grocery store—you know, the kind where you eat one chocolate per day all December long.  I even got one this year to keep the nostalgia of childhood alive :-).

Last year, I started a new tradition when a friend presented me with a copy of Max Lucado's In the Manger: 25 Inspirational Selections for Advent.  So this morning, after chomping on a piece of chocolate, I dug into today's selection.

Max beautifully sets up the season ...

A Day With Max Lucado

  • Tuesday, October 13, 2015

Biola-Max-Lucado-Glory-Days-PrayerIt was 9:15 AM on October 7, 2015.  I joined a crowd of students walking to the Biola University gymnasium in La Mirada, CA.  Max Lucado would soon be addressing 800-900 students, staff, faculty, and guests.  This day had been on the calendar for months.  And now it was finally here.

After the privilege of serving Max's radio ministry for 15 months,
I would finally get to meet him!

I found my seat next to Jim Sanders.  When I looked to the left and saw Max sitting only two seats away, I thought, So this is how it ...

While most 18-year-olds are posting selfies and bingeing on Netflix, Hannah Leary is memorizing books of the Bible.  Not just verses, not just chapters, and not just a book or twothis National Bible Bee (NBB) competitor has committed 10 entire books of the Bible to memory!

In a recent World Magazine article, Hannah says of her six-year NBB involvement, "At first, yes, I was just reading theological words.  But then it started coming alive."

The other 359 students who make it to finals would probably say the same.  Even if they don't take home a prize, these young ...

Living my glory days—full throttle!

  • Tuesday, August 4, 2015

birthday-cakeToday's my birthday.  I'm 75 years old, and it's either "full throttle" or stop breathing!

So delving into Max Lucado's new book, "Glory Days: Living Your Promised Land Life Now" has special significance in this season of my life.  With each new book, I say, "this is his best so far!"  But Glory Days is his best!  Max is a master story-teller, no question—stories that are a result of his unrelenting study of God and His story!

And this one's a whopper!  Max uses as his text the Old Testament book of Joshua.  He ...

What if There's More to Being a Christian?

  • Tuesday, July 21, 2015

A few weeks ago, a friend made strawberry shortcake to share at the office.  Strawberry shortcake has always been high on my list of favorite desserts, so I could not WAIT to consume the delectable treat.  At first bite, I noticed a difference between this shortcake, compared to all the others I'd ever eaten.

It was the cream topping.  I looked at Jani and said, "This is NOT Cool Whip, is it?"  She laughed, surprised, and assured me it absolutely was not Cool Whip.  Then, the master chef explained how she had concocted the whipped topping from scratch and ...
