Seeking Solitude

  • Monday, June 29, 2015

Max-LucadoIn the past several weeks, I've dug into my Bible and talked with God more than I had for a long time.  When I am involved in every activity I can find, I don't make time for the Lord.  And that's damaging.

Max Lucado
recently shared, "We'll try anything to get rid of our loneliness.  But should we?  Should we be so quick to drop it?  Could it be that loneliness is a gift?  A gift from God?"

Loneliness can come in a variety of forms.  In the American culture, it's easy to feel lonely ...

When Will Isn't Enough

  • Tuesday, May 26, 2015

Max-LucadoSeveral weeks ago, I fell prey to a nasty cold.  The first four days of the virus, I was in denial.  I went to work and church and ran errands, just like a normal week.

Then, on day #5, I finally admitted to being sick.  But I figured I could "out-will" the virus.  So I got ready for work like a regular Monday and stumbled into the office.  A few colleagues asked if I was feeling OK.  I told them "not really"but I was going to power through the day anyhow.  No need to worry about me!  I even ...

Your Mission Field is Under Your Roof

  • Tuesday, April 28, 2015

Max-LucadoIn an era of abounding "self-help" books, articles, podcasts and seminars ... the greatest "self-help" presentation I've listened to was yesterday's edition of UpWords® with Max Lucado.  The premise: Evaluate my life and ask myself ... Am I truly serving God?  No other life goals or achievements matter if the answer to that question isn't "yes."

Max says, "Want to bring focus to your life?  Do what Jesus did.  Go home, love your family, and take care of business!  Your first mission field is under your roof.  What makes you think they'll believe you overseas if they don ...

Simon & Saeed: Take Up Your Cross

  • Tuesday, March 31, 2015

max-lucadoIn last Thursday's edition of UpWords® with Max Lucado, listeners were reminded of Christ's mandate to believers in Luke 9:23:

"If any of you want to be my followers, you must forget yourself.  You must take up your cross each day and follow me."

Max talked about Simon from Cyrene, the man who Roman soldiers commanded to carry Jesus' cross to Golgotha.  "Simon did literally what God calls us to do figuratively: take up the cross and follow Jesus," reflects Max.

As I listened to the recount of Simon's cross-bearing, Pastor Saeed Abedini came to mind ...

God's Personal Brand

  • Tuesday, March 3, 2015

personal-brand-max-lucado-easterIn college, I studied business administration.  As part of the curriculum, I read online business articles, mostly found through LinkedIn.  It was fascinating to find how many articles focused on "personal branding."

Personal branding is the idea of people marketing themselves as a brand, in order to build a reputation and network.  This was a whole new idea to me, and I was excited to learn about it!

As is the case for most college seniors, I felt unsure about what to expect directly after college.  Seeing personal branding as the way to guarantee success, I read dozens of articles ...

Soul Writing

  • Monday, February 2, 2015

max-lucadoSometimes when writing, I overthink the mechanics and end up halting the flow of words.  Last week, a friend offered to help me with a particular writing project.  "The best writing comes from the soul," she told me kindly.

As I pondered her words, Max Lucado came to mind.  He is a man who clearly understands and utilizes "soul writing."  And his writing is exceptional because of how deeply his soul is immersed in the Word of God.

In a recent edition of "UpWords®", Max shared:

A quiet time with God is very similar to a special date. Denalyn and ...
