NOT Just the Facts, Please!

News-paper-reading-current-events-Janet-Mefferd-Today

Wednesday in San Bernardino, California ... 14 dead.  21 injured.  And the rest of the nation left in solemn shock.

Police officers rush to the scene, reporters scramble to gather the facts, and the White House delivers an emergency address.  In a world where these horrific attacks increasingly run the risk of becoming labeled commonplace or routine, it can be a challenge to truly process what's going on.

To really process involves much more than contemplating the news reports.  It requires digesting the facts and employing the heart to decipher each event through the lens of our worldview.  As you ...

Jesus is NOT the Reason for the Season

"Jesus is not the reason for the season."

Recently I heard one person declare that contrarian view, belying the trite bumper sticker which reminds us of the "Christ" in "Christmas."

Now, I assumed their statement was primarily designed to get my attention (just like it was mine, to get yours).  But then I wondered how they would explain such a seemingly contradictory declaration.  It seems almost sacrilegious to say anything but "Jesus is the reason for the season."

They went on to say, "No, Jesus isn't the reason for the season, you are the reason for the season."  OK ...

So how does one take that first step? And what does it mean to walk with Jesus Christ? It's a question many new believers have asked, even those who have been a Christian for decades.  Likely many of your listeners are seeking answers to those ...

Advent Starts Now

Christmas-Tree-Max-Lucado-UpWords®What Advent traditions mark this season for you?  As children, my sisters and I enjoyed those cardboard Advent calendars from the grocery store—you know, the kind where you eat one chocolate per day all December long.  I even got one this year to keep the nostalgia of childhood alive :-).

Last year, I started a new tradition when a friend presented me with a copy of Max Lucado's In the Manger: 25 Inspirational Selections for Advent.  So this morning, after chomping on a piece of chocolate, I dug into today's selection.

Max beautifully sets up the season ...
