Joni and Friends®— Family Retreats

When you're dealing with something hard, it can feel at times that no one else in the world is going through the same thing you are. No one understands, there is no one else out there like me, I'm alone and set apart.

Family at Joni and Friends® Family RetreatI felt that way the most when it came to physical and occupational therapy. I was young and learning how to use my prosthetic arm to accomplish every day tasks was daunting. It was hard. It hurt. I wasn't doing it right. I felt so alone and I'm sure my parents were distressed ...

Fathers-DayFriends of mine welcomed a new daughter--their third--to their family and dad's words in his announcement were:  "I'm in love all over again!"

I smiled.  It's so like this young man, this young father, to say those words!  And I wondered.  How many children have heard their dad say such loving words to them?

1st Corinthians 13 says "Love never fails."  And yet, we all know love does fail.  Not the love of our heavenly Father.  But sometimes we just need to hear dad say he loves us as God does--like being "in love all over ...

Google's Homepage Doodle GuitarAn email appeared in my inbox with the subject line "GOOGLE."  It came from a co-worker whose office is seven doors away from mine.  I thought, Hmm, what has Google done now?  The email said:

Fathers are mocked in TV sitcoms, declared unnecessary by feminists, and ignored by government social programs, but research and common sense say otherwise.

It's been proven that close father-adolescent bonds produce better grades in school and protect against such negative influences as peer drug use and early sexual activity.  Girls with involved dads are less likely to become pregnant, and boys who report a strong relationship with their father tend to believe that they'll ...

As a mom of three (including a recent high school graduate!), I'm very mindful of my parental responsibilities--moms and dads know that it is our duty to teach, guide and encourage our children as well as our privilege to help them grow in their relationship with Christ.

Recently though, I learned an important lesson from a 5 year old boy named Fred.

Fred is one of my AWANA Sparks and on Memorial Day, he told his mother he wanted to go to the cemetery and place flags for the dead soldiers.

When his mom asked him why, he said ...

A Lifetime Sacrifice - A 4th of July Special

Brad Mattes - 4th of July SpecialI'm a firm believer that we need to take time to celebrate life. Simply slowing down to enjoy a meal with family and friends on special occasions is important to me, as I'm sure it is for you too! Perhaps that's why I'll most likely spend Independence Day doing just that! In the midst of these family times, however, I also like to think about what makes the day special in the first place. This 4th of July, as you enjoy the BBQ and fireworks, we invite you to also take time to pay tribute ...
