Super Bowl Dad-Vertisements

"Dad-vertising" is what one writer coined for the Super Bowl ads whose focus was dads.  And though he confesses that the dad-vertisements will not make him want to go out and buy a brand new Nissan Maxima or Toyota Camry, he admitted that the commercials did strike a chord.

The ads highlighted the important, hands-on role that many involved fathers play in their kids' lives.  The sentimentality of kids calling for their dad and proud dads sending their daughters off as young women into the world . . . I could see how the ads would tug at a father's heart strings ...

Story Changers

Ravette_Mercy Ships®One of my favorite things about the weekend is taking a walk through the neighborhood.  In fact, I did so just this morning.  A daily part of life—walking—can be so taken for granted.  But there are people like Ravette who are born with genu recurvatum, or "backward-bending knee."

Sitting in a chair, attending school, or climbing a staircase, were all struggles for the 11-year-old girl.  No one in her village was able to help her—not even the traditional medicine man, who ended up breaking Ravette's legs when trying to fix them.

Soul Writing

max-lucadoSometimes when writing, I overthink the mechanics and end up halting the flow of words.  Last week, a friend offered to help me with a particular writing project.  "The best writing comes from the soul," she told me kindly.

The Bible in 90 Days

  • Friday, January 23, 2015

I've got two confessions:  I got a late start, and I'm not keeping up.  But I'm enjoying the benefits nonetheless.

If you know Haven Today, you know each year starts with our collective read through "The Bible in 90 Days."  Well, I started the schedule a week late.  And, candidly, I haven't been able to make up the lost ground.  But it really doesn't matter.  It's such a wonderful experience to get an overview of scripture, many of passages would otherwise remain largely unread.

Then, this year, I decided to give it a twist ...

How to Make a Strong Marriage

gary thomas a lifelong loveI am a member of a generation that is vastly unmarrieda generation that collectively is unsure there is hope left in marriage.  I am a millennial.  As such, I was intrigued when I heard about Gary Thomas's book, A Lifelong Love.  And I've grown even more fascinated as Gary's wisdom shines through the content.

Wouldn't it be nice to have all the answers before you started a relationship? While this is obviously impossible, Gary provides a roadmap for married couples and singles alike-to know what they should strive for in marriage.

He starts with the ...
