In 1904: Cy Young threw the first perfect game in modern Major League Baseball history.

In 1961: Commander Alan Shepard Jr. was rocketed 115 miles into space from Cape Canaveral to become America's first space explorer. Fifteen minutes later in the Atlantic Ocean, he said, "Boy, what a ride!"
